Terms week 8:
- Pausanias → a regent for Leonidas’ son Pleistarchus, that was still underage, in the time before the Peloponnesian war.
- Delian League → a league of about 150 polis that aimed to contain Persia out of the Greek territory
- Aeschylus → Athenian tragedian, contemporary with Euripidies and Sophocles
- Thucydides → Athenian historian, writes about the Peloponnesian Wars, contemporary of Herodotus
- Cleruchy → A type of colony of Athens that was not independent, all the citizens still remained the citizens of Athens
- Cimon → the leader of the Delian League, at the time that they expelled the Persians from Europe
- Citizenship law of 451 → the citizens of one state can only marry the citizens of their own state
- Liturgies → network of public services established by the Democratic party in Athens
- Epikleros → a daughter that was heir of the family because all the other male descendants have died, she needed to marry the closest distant relative
- Acropolis → a common future of all polis, built on a hill so that it was able to be seen from far away, a place to worship
- Agora → center of the city, a place for secular activities and also for worship
- Hippocrates → the first one to study medicine, he had his students, observed and documented various illnesses
- Physis and nomos → a debate between the nature and nurture
- Epidamnus → Corcyran colony that sought assistance from Corcyra but they did not listen, so they aligned themselves with Corinth
- Potidea → Corinthian colony and a member of the Athenian alliance, before that Athens assaulted it for two years
- Megarian decrees → Athenians accused the Megarians of harboring escaped slaves and cultivating sacred land, one of the causes of the Peloponnesian War
- Oedipus → the king of Thebes, He fulfilled a prophecy that said he would kill his father and marry his mother, and thus brought disaster on his city and family
- Jocasta → mother and wife of Oedipus, grandmother of Antigone, sister of Creon, queen of Thebes
- Creon → best known as the ruler of Thebes, and a brother of Jocasta, takes over the throne from Oedipus, when he learns the truth about his family
- Teiresias → a blind prophet of Thebes, legendary for his role in Oedipus the King, where he prophets to Oedipus and tells him the truth about his family
- Corinth → a polis in ancient Greece, that spared the Peloponnesian war, it and Athens had a dispute over Corinthian colony Corcyra. They fought against Athens in the Peloponnesian war.
- Hellenes → a nation and ethnic group native to Greece
- Archidamus → a king of Sparta, agreed with Pericles on the Thirty Years' Peace between Athens and Sparta, that temporarily ended the Peloponnesian War
- Pericles → a prominent and influential statesman, orator, and general of Athens during the city's Golden Age—specifically, the time between the Persian and Peloponnesian wars
- Corcyra → Corinthian colony, had a quarrel with Corinth over Epidamnus, had a good fleet that was also used by Athens in the Peloponnesian War, since they were allies
- Epidamnus → a city that was founded in 627 BC in Illyria by a group of colonists from Corinth and Corcyra.
- Speech of Corcyra to Athens --> one of the most famous speeches in the whole book, if somebody has never done anything for you that does not mean that you don't need to do anything for them and they will be in your debt until they repay the favor
