IDs for Week 11 (1st Half, Thucydides 5)

1. Brasidas – Spartan commander sent to help friendly Thracians fight against the Athenians; dies in 422 BC in a sally with the army of Cleon in which his forces rout the Athenian forces and also kill the Athenian general Cleon. His death allows for peace talks between Athens and Sparta to take place.
2. Speech of Brasidas before Amphipolis – Calls upon the Dorians to defeat the Ionians because they are accustomed to beating them. Then calls upon Spartans to act like Spartans and be brave.
3. Battle at Amphipolis – Takes place in 422 BC. Sally by the Spartan/Thracian coalition under Brasidas turns the tides of the war in Thrace. Cleon’s mistake in sounding the retreat causes the decimation of the Athenian army; both Cleon and Brasidas die in this battle. Athenian survivors sail off home with their dead. Causes Athens to desire peace with Sparta.
4. Athenian and Spartan treaty - Takes place in 422 BC. It is a result of Sparta’s desire to reacquire its POWs from Pylos as well as Athenian change of view on the limits of their power due to its losses at Delium and Amphipolis. Also can be attributed to the fact that the two most opposed people to peace, the Spartan commander Brasidas and the Athenian strategos Cleon both died. The Spartans and its allies give back the land it gained while Athens and its allies gave back the land it acquired. Both parties renew oath early.
5. Athenian and Spartan alliance - Takes place in 422 BC. Made because certain Spartan allies would not adhere to the terms of the treaty. Terms are that they will be allies for fifty years and help each other out in the case of invasions, that Athenians will help the Spartans in the case of a Helot revolt, and that the oath will be renewed yearly. This ends the first Peloponnesian war.
6. Mantinea – Chooses to switch from the Peloponnesian alliance to one with the Argives. This gave other Peloponnesian cities thought to switching sides to the people of Argos because they felt that they had been treated unfairly in the treaty Sparta had made with Athens.
7. Argos-Athenian Alliance – Takes place in 420 BC. After the failed creation of an independent defensive league with the Boeotians, Corinthians, and the Megarians, Argos was scared it would be in a war with the Spartans, Tegeans, Boeotians, and the Athenians at the same time. It fails because Boeotians do not agree, so the Argives ally with the Athenians after Nicias fails to settle matters between the Spartans and the Athenians.
8. Panactum – City that the Boeotians were supposed to give back to Athens. However, it was found out that the Boeotians had razed it, which caused the Athenians to break the treaty and start the war again.
9. Nicias – Athenian strategos who was pro Spartan. He argues that they should postpone action on the Argive proposals and ask the Spartans to give up their alliance with the Boeotians and return Panactum instead. Spartans refuse, causing the Athenian people to ally with Argos and its allies.
10. Alcibiades – Young Athenian who was distinguished because he was from a rich and well-known family. Clamored for war against the Spartans because they couldn’t be trusted.
11. Epidaurus – Ally of Sparta that Argos decides to attack. The distress of the Epidaurians causes the Spartans to march against Argos. Happens around 418 BC.
12. The Battle of Mantinea – 418 BC battle between the Spartans and its allies and the Argives and its allies. The Argives lose.
13. Argive-Spartan peace treaty- Happens in 418 BC. After the Argives lose at the Battle of Mantinea, they accept a peace treaty with the Spartans. The Argives and Spartans would give back all property and prisoners. This leads to an alliance with the Spartans. Mantinea also allies with the Spartans seeing as that they are powerless without the Argives.
14. Melian dialogue: Happens in 416 BC. There is an exchange between the Athenian envoys and the Melians. Athenians tell the Melians that the weak should suffer what they must and do not listen to the moral arguments of the Melians. The Athenians tell the Melians that it would be in their best interests to peacefully accept Athenian rule so that they may both gain (Athens in tribute and Melians in surviving). Then the Melians argue that Athens’ policy of making all states subject to it will create more enemies. The Athenians tell the Melians that hope will delude them and lead them to ruin. The Melians at the end of the dialogue refuse to become subject to Athens, and upon their defeat, all the men in their city are executed and the women and children are enslaved.
15. Cleon - Athenian strategos who dies at the Battle of Amphipolis in 422 BC. He was one of the major Athenian opponents to an alliance and peace with Sparta. His death allows for peace talks between Athens and Sparta to take place.

these IDs are great. Are there any readings or whatever that still need to be covered that I can do?

Sorry you couldn't make it. We're going to do lots of work on the forum though, so don't worry too much about missing out on stuff. The first essay topic is pretty much all we went over today, and a lot of the major points are on my post for essay topic number one. Seeing as that Sosin really wants us to write about the shield, we thought that if we brainstormed ideas about the shield and how it applies to all our other readings, we should be prepared to answer a lot of the essay topics.

As for readings that haven't been done, you could help with week 14 IDs. I don't exactly remember who is doing the week 14 IDs, but you could email the class and ask who needs help with their ID workload, I'm pretty sure you'll get lots of replies.

OR

Maybe you could write short summaries on some of the important court cases/ plays that we read and some of their major points. That would be awesome. I'm not asking you to do this - just suggesting something for you to do that would be really cool.

You should also ask one more time about a study group on Thursday. I'm sure that some of the people that didn't come and some of the people who would want to meet again would be up for it.
